Preparing your pictures for the web

Good pictures add a lot to your website presentation. Not everyone understands that so one of the ways to trump your competition is to always have great pictures. Picasa has tools that make it easy to:

When you have prepared all your pictures and are happy with how they look, you are ready to export. Export is one of the commands at the bottom, right of the Picasa page. It takes your original pictures, applies the changes you made, and exports the improved copy as a new images. The exported images are the ones you will want to use for your website.

As part of the export process you will be able to specify the size and quality of the new picture. Adter you click "Export" you will see a page which includes "Image Size Options". You need to click on the button that says "Resize To:". That will should you a slider with an indicator you can drag by mousing over it, holding down the left mouse button and dragging it. Drag it so it shows 1200 Pixels.

Below that is an "Image Quality" dropdown box. Click the dropdown pointer and select "Custom". That will show you another slider. Drag the slider until it shows "70"

The result will be pictures that look good on the screen but which take up as little space as possible and don't blow up the server. If you see something like this:

"Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to
allocate 13824 bytes)" when you upload to your website, the picture was to big.

We believe that 1200 pixel images at 70% quality represent the best size, speed and resolution compromise for most people.
